Ways to brighten up your summer entertaining.

Summer fare should be light, easy, and simple to clean up. Stock up on colorful disposable plates, napkins, flatware, and drink cups for a fun, festive, and easy-to-clean-up alfresco meal anytime. (Thinking breakfast on the patio? Try this fabulous Blueberry Coffee Cake.)

Use red, white and blue raffia ties in place of traditional napkin rings. Tuck a fresh flower under each knot right before the meal is served.

Party long after the sun goes down. Extend the warm summer evening hours with pretty, homemade luminarias. Take small, plain paper bags (lunch sized is perfect) and cut out patterns with a small scissor. For a great Fourth of July look, embellish the bags with stick on stars and red, white and blue markers. (This is a perfect activity for the kids.) When the decorating is done put a cup of sand or fine gravel in each open bag and place a tea light in the center of the sand. Position the luminarias on your deck or patio, at the edges of stairs, and even along the driveway. Light with a long handled candle lighter.

Celebrate summer in a sporty way with your own "Backyard Olympics." Set up a croquet course, a badminton or volleyball net, horseshoes, and/or bocce on your lawn and have a tournament in which family and guests compete for fun and prizes .Be sure to have plenty of icy soft drinks, as well as Comstock/Wilderness homemade treats on hand for hungry and thirsty contestants.
